Its time to go pro while doing great work for the planet.           Register for courses and build community solutions.

With the hold on most of our projects and postponement of international travel, we are opening live, online sessions for training. This is an important time to develop our skills hello design solutions so we can be ready when called to help Bring sustainable resilience to our communities. Food production is going to be an important activity for all communities this summer. Also we want to develop our landscapes with good design principles.

Join us on-line or on-site for an intense, life and career changing event. Designs for resilience can be many acres or a homestead food forest.

Each site has its own design solution to deliver the needed food, fibers, medicines, biodiversity, and higher capacity for increased harvest each year. Each site design is site and client specific. The process delivers that!

Ecological Design is the foundation of the SouthWoods design process.

We follow nature's patterns, energy, and is supported by resource cycling of the design solutions.

The natural beauty of the land appears from following nature's patterns.

We create the space, providing the abiotic and biotic conditions for the prefered species. Then plant enough density snd diversity to out compete the plants the may encroach on the designed system. This takes less and less time as the system develops. Neighboiring sites and human spaces may negatively affect the site conditions at times. Observation and frequent inspection will determine courses of action to maintain the outcomes desired.

Build a Legacy of Sustainable Design for Generations to Come

Abundance by personal choice, cultural change, and ecological solutions.

SouthWoods develops and enhances the systems that nature uses to increase natural capital and raise the carrying capacity of the land. Following nature's patterns, systems, cycles, and the site specific requirements, we ensure a resilient trajectory to a stable ecosystem.

Base Map and Site Assessment

Resource Sitemaps are followed by concept maps for functional spaces. No detail yet, only the function and services from a specific area. All the areas must be in a relative location so water, nutrients, and materials can be cycled through the property. Recommendations are also made for improvements or enhancements of current conditions on the site.

Transitioning long fallowed fields to woodland pasture, perennial crops, and orchard requires a multilayered agro-ecosystem design. After extensive site assessment accounting for climate, soil ecology, geology and existing ecological systems, we start by building low impact access to the functional spaces on the site and then develop water catchment systems for drought proofing. Client objectives and goals are integrated into a new agro-ecology with over yielding and multi-seasonal harvests, This is required to support the stewards of the land and the ecosystem that supports them. Plant selection is based on using species most suited to the climate and soils. Many of the plants are chosen because they build soil structure, provide beneficial habitat, and fertility supporting the anchor plants which are harvested for human consumption. Nutrients and organic matter is cycled back into the soil to maintain and build soil life. The landscape is now, diverse, and rich with habitat. It is an integrated forest garden, complete with small livestock to collect and spread nutrients across the landscape. A legacy landscape.

Final Design Concept

are the foundation to developing good designs that fit the owner's goals, property and the environment.

Accurate and detailed base maps are essential for measurements and calculations of materials. Spacing of plants, positioning features, and easy access by the occupants.

Southwoods delivers detailed and multi-layered base maps to inform and inspire sustainable ecological design.
